Find TWO current media topics which you consider to be social justice or moral issues. Then using your eduBlog Page, under the category CST/IST – Project 5, answer the following questions for each media topic.

MORAL ISSUE

1. Name the issue

David Gallop stunned on IRB’s reply on Sonny Bill Williams

 2. Describe one media account of this issue

The media account in this issue if mainly about Sonny Bill Williams leaving the NRL but running out on a five year contract with the Bulldogs. But the damaging second rower is only in his first year of his contract. And David Gallop dissapointed at the refusal of the IRB to dissallow Sonny Bill Williams from playing Union in France.

 3. Where did you get this media account from?

I had received this media account from http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/sport/nrl/story/0,26799,24109476-5006066,00.html

 4. Is this media account correct or reliable? Why?

This media account is correct because i have read other news reports  and they are the same or similar.

 5. Where else might you be able to find more information about this issue?

On the TV or other news websites like Foxsports or newspaper magazines.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

1. Name the issue

BusinessWorld: Number of poor families rising

2. Describe one media account of this issue

This issue mainly focuses on the fact that poverty rates in families are rising and also in MANILA, Philippines – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo may have declared a 20-year low in self-rated poverty as an accomplishment but a worsening economy has consigned that result, recorded in 2007, to history.

3. Where did you get this media account from?

I got this media account from the following link below:

http://www.gmanews.tv/story/110492/BusinessWorld-Number-of-poor-families-rising

4. Is this media account correct or reliable? Why?

Yes this account is true because statistics show that poverty has dropped in the Phillipenes and several magazine issues about the same topic state that this information is true.

5. Where else might you be able to find more information about this issue?

You could find this information on newspaper articles or on the television on the news.

1. Describe TWO things that you have learnt during this lesson.

In today’s lesson i have learnt that everything that you read in the newspaper or in the media is not true and it is up to you to decide whether the information given is factual or fictional. Another thing i learnt was that media can be manipulative to sell their story so that the audience or the public will buy their product.

2. Identify TWO areas you want to concentrate on during this project that you think need a greater improvement from the last project.

One area i would like to concentrate on during this project would be to organise my time management and another would be to make sure that i am always keeping contact with other group members so that i wont let other group members fall behind me.

3. Discuss TWO ways in which your group could resolve any disputes during this process.

One way my group could resolve any disputes is we could all sit at a table and talk together as mature men or we could just take our dispute to the teacher and ask if he could help us resolve our problem.

1.What did you like about the wikispace project? Explain?

I liked the project because in my group we all had different parts to do. And everyone of us in our group got to edit and do other parts of the project. When someone had put something in like had entered a text, other people got to edit it and make it better.

2. What did you NOT like about the wikispace project? Explaion.

The only thing i didnt like was when people didnt put up any work on the wikispace.

3. What did you find hard about working in groups?

I just found it hard when two people would do most of the work and the other person wouldnt do as much or not as much as needed.

4.How did the wikispace keep everyone in your team accountable?

The wikispace keeps everyone working because the teacher marking can just check the history tab to see which person did what. So if you are smart you would want to do your work, because even though your teacher cant see you behind your laptob lid, he can see what work you have submitted and what work you have not submitted.

5. How could you improve your presentation?

I could improve my presentation by putting more effort into the presentation and not reading off the actual screen.

Investigate how Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered pulsars in 1967. Write a short account of this event. (5 lines)

An exact extract that well and clearly answers this question perfectly. (i think)

http://starchild.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/StarChild/whos_who_level2/bell.html

Bell’s first two years at Cambridge were spent assisting in the construction of an 81.5-megahertz radio telescope that was to be used to track quasars. The telescope went into operation in 1967. It was Jocelyn Bell’s job to operate the telescope and to analyze over 120 meters of chart paper produced by the telescope every four days. After several weeks of analysis, Bell noticed some unusual markings on the chart paper. These markings were made by a radio source too fast and regular to be a quasar. Although the source’s signal took up only about 2.5 centimeters of the 121.8 meters of chart paper, Jocelyn Bell recognized its importance. She had detected the first evidence of a pulsar.

In February of 1968, news of the discovery made by Jocelyn Bell was published in the journal Nature. Further studies by groups of astronomers around the world identified the signals as coming from rapidly rotating neutron stars. These objects, first noticed by Jocelyn Bell, became known as pulsars. The term pulsar is an abbreviation for pulsating radio star or rapidly pulsating radio sources.

Recently NASA was successful in launching a space craft named Phoenix which landed on the surface of Mars.

You are to write a journal outlining why NASA would undertake such an experiment.

  • What do you think the Phoenix will find?

I think the phoenix will find out if there is life available on Mars. Whether or not human civilization is able to retreat to a new planet. Also if vegetation and food resources can be supplied by the planet if this planet was to ever support life for us humans. More about the phoenix’ mission can be followed up by this website:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/phoenix/mission/index.html

  • Do you think as a planet we should be researching other planets? Why/ why not?

I am not quite sure about this question but maybe we should research other planets because when we are in need of resources or another planet for life, then we cant always rely on the planet Mars because it may not supply us with what we are looking for.

  • Any other comments.

No further comment.

THE BIG BANG:

What contribution did the following scientists make towards the big bang theory?

  • Walter Adams.

American astronomer who is best known for his spectroscopic studies. Using the spectroscope, he investigated sunspots and the rotation of the Sun, the velocities and distances of thousands of stars, and planetary atmospheres.

  • Ralph Alpher.

Ralph Asher Alpher authored his Ph.D. dissertation on the Big Bang theory in 1948. His mathematical formula brought into being the scientific theory of the origin of the universe. His paper said the universe occurred 14 billion years ago with a superhot explosion and later, in 1948, Alpher showed proof. No one accepted these ridiculous ideas until 1964 when two radio astronomers showed Alpher’s theory was correct. Unfortunately, they received the Nobel Prize, not Ralph Alpher.

  • Robert Dicke.

Dicke (1970) gave an interesting argument that the universe must have very nearly the critical density of matter needed to stop it expanding forever. Standard models of the universe pass through stages dominated by radiation, matter, curvature etc. Transitions between stages are very special cosmic times which a priori could differ by many orders of magnitude.

THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

Research and gather information from the internet about the Hubble Space Telescope. Use the following questions as the basis for your journal entry:

  • What was Hubble’s involvement in space research?

Edwin Hubble’s involvement in space research was the fact that he was an astronomer who studied all galaxies except the Milky Way. The fact that he was an astromoner made him involved in space research.

  • What does the telescope do?

The Hubble Space Telescope is a telescope carried into orbit by a space shuttle in April 1990. Named for American astronomer Edwin Hubble. It provides sharper images of heavenly bodies than other telescopes do. It is a reflecting telescope with a light-gathering mirror 94 inches (240 centimeters) in diameter.

  • Where can the telescope be found?

17 Jun 2008 00:47 UTC

Latitude
(Degrees)
Longitude
(Degrees)
Altitude
(Kilometers)
25.4 166.4 561.5

  • Hubble whirls around Earth at 5 miles per second. If a car could travel that fast, a road trip from Los Angeles to New York City would take only 10 minutes.
  • Hubble completes one full orbit every 97 minutes.
  • Hubble is nearly the size of a large school bus, but it can fit inside the cargo bay of a space shuttle.
  • In an average orbit, Hubble uses about the same amount of energy as 28 100-watt light bulbs.
  • Hubble travels more than 150 million miles (241 million km) per year.

http://science.nasa.gov/temp/hubbleloc.html

  • What is Hubble’s law?

Hubbles Law states that distant stars and galaxies were receeding from us and that the further away they were, the faster they were going.

1. Has your image of Jesus changed during the project? How or Why not?

My image of Jesus has changed because i see all these different images of Jesus and they are completely different to what i thought my image of Jesus would be. So i have decided to change my image of Jesus and i will have to think my image through alot clearer.

2. What do you feel is the best way to portray an image of Jesus and why?

I am still not sure what i feel is the best way to portray Jesus but i know that i will do a positive image of Jesus because Jesus was always positive about things. So i will still have to think of my image.

3. What have you enjoyed about the project so far and what would you do differently?

So far i have actually liked looking for images of Jesus and looking at what other people and cultures draw Jesus as or see him as. And i like working with other people to help me with Photoshop and other ways of drawing Jesus.

1) What form of medium (music, art or literature ) allows you to best connect with Jesus and Why

The form of medium that allows me to connect with Jesus would be art because i could pray and look at him straight, and concerntrate on him only.

2) Why has Jesus been portrayed in so many different ways throughout history?

Sometimes because it is the only way that people can relate to Jesus and is the way some people see Jesus like with myself i look at Jesus and see my dad, which is true because i believe my dad is hard working and peaceful, and he cares for other people other than himself but i also see my mum as well. Different people see different objects and figures as their example of Jesus.

3) How is Jesus portrayed at Parramatta Marist?

Jesus is portrayed through the ways of St Marcellin Champagnat. Also you can say that the students and staff at Parramatta Marist display the true morals and ways of Jesus.

4) What artistic time period do you think best represents your image of Jesus and why?

The time period i am in now which back in the olden days i would call the futuristic period and the modernism theme.

5) Identify one image of Jesus that appeals to you. What do you like about the representation?

I like how they show Jesus as a teacher because he was a teacher of things especially towards his society and also towards ourselves. In this image he is humble and gentle. The colour may be dark on the outside but Jesus is represented as a white figure with his white robe.
6) What factors currently shape your image of Jesus and why.

Jesus with white clothes

halo around Jesus because he is God

and just normal factors that shape any image of JESUS because i dont really mind, i just dont like when Jesus is represented as a wrong or unpleasant figure. So i always try to keep my images of Jesus as a gentle and humble presence

1) What words and or images come to mind when you hear the word Jesus.

Words that come to mind when i hear the word Jesus are words that are calm and are peaceful. To me Jesus is humble and kind. These are the types of words i hear, also gentle, significance, helpful and light. These words i just wrote are words that i think of when i hear Jesus.

2) Why might it be important for young people to identify with an image of Jesus?

So young people can have an idea of what Jesus is to them and what he means to them. It may comfort young people if they have an idea of what Jesus is to them. Like me i think of my mum and my dad when i think of Jesus and all the people that comfort me and support me.

3) Where in your life do you most associate with images of Jesus?

When your at church and when your talking to Jesus in prayer you wonder who your talking to and you may think of Jesus’ image in your dreams and in your heart.
