Internet connections are very rare in Burma, partly for reasons of poverty but mostly because of the military regime’s harsh crackdown on freedom of expression. As in Cuba and North Korea, the Internet frightens the authorities, who keep it out of the hands of their subjects. So it is growing very slowly, with the opening of only a handful of cybercafés and assignment of a few thousand e-mail addresses, all under tight surveillance.

The escalation of the government’s effort to neutralize critical online opinion comes after a series of large anti-Japanese, anti-pollution and anti-corruption protests, many of which were organised or publicised using instant messaging services, chatrooms and text messages. Although the existence of an Internet police task force, estimated at more than 30,000,[3] has been known for some time, attention is mostly focused on their work as censors and monitors. Critical comments appearing on Internet forums, bulletin boards, blogs, vlogs or any major portals such as Sohu and Sina are usually erased within minutes.

People who illegally download films and music will be cut off from the internet under new legislative proposals to be unveiled next week.
Internet service providers (ISPs) will be legally required to take action against users who access pirated material, The Times has learnt.
Users suspected of wrongly downloading films or music will receive a warning e-mail for the first offence, a suspension for the second infringement and the termination of their internet contract if caught a third time, under the most likely option to emerge from discussions about the new law.
4.) Discuss how you would feel if the Australian government banned the Internet. What privileges would you lose? (2 Paragraphs)
If the Australian government were to ban the internet in Australia the privelleges i would lose would be to socialise with my friends. I wouldnt be able to talk to my friends or send them information or tell them what was happening at school today. I dont know what would really happen without internet but i do know that it would be harder to communicate, and talk with other people from different countries.
Another privellege that i would loose would be to find information and research for images and important videos for school. There would be no other way of finding this information quicker than finding it quicker on the internet. I would have to access a whole of books just to find a whole bunch of information whereas if i look it up on the internet it narrows the search down for me to find the school information that i would want to look for. I would not be able to watch documentaries and videos from other countries to help me with school.
Internet would be quite a big loss in Australia for me.
